The Watermark Said "Do Not Duplicate." It Duplicated.
Sony's second trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day leaked this week, days ahead of its June 17 debut. Every frame carried a big red X and a stern warning: Do Not Duplicate – Property of Sony.
It duplicated. Enthusiastically. Across YouTube, X, and Reddit. Someone even cropped and zoomed the footage specifically to dodge Sony's automated copyright detection — which means the leaker put more engineering effort into distributing the asset than Sony put into protecting it.
This is the second trailer in a row. The first leaked in December, unfinished, forcing the VFX team to surrender their weekends reworking it. Now there's speculation an entire marketing folder of trailer cuts was sitting exposed somewhere in the distribution chain. Not hacked. Not heisted. Sitting there. Like a pizza in a break room.
Let's inventory Sony's security architecture, because it's a masterclass:
Layer 1: A label asking people nicely. Layer 2: A watermark, so they can identify the leaker after the leak. This is not security. This is an obituary with a name field. Layer 3: DMCA takedowns. Also known as mopping the ocean.
That's the whole stack. A request, a receipt, and a regret.
Here's the punchline, and it isn't funny: this is also how most enterprises protect their actual data.
The trailer went out in plaintext — fully usable, fully watchable — to a sprawl of agencies, platforms, and post houses Sony doesn't control and can't audit. The only thing standing between the asset and the internet was everyone in that chain behaving. Forever. Sony ran this exact experiment in 2014 with the entire studio's email. The results were published. Widely.
Swap "trailer" for "defence procurement file," "health record," or "customer database" and you've described the standard enterprise data posture: the crown jewels, replicated whole across other people's infrastructure, protected by contracts and optimism. Spider-Man's identity had better operational security than Spider-Man's marketing assets.
There's a structural fix, and it's the one we built SkyeConnex around: don't protect the perimeter — make the leak worthless.

That's the difference between contractual control and mathematical control. A contract says do not duplicate. Mathematics says duplicate all you want — enjoy your noise.
Sony will recut the trailer. The VFX team will lose more weekends. The movie will make a billion dollars and none of this will matter to them.
It should matter to you, though. Because your data is protected exactly the way that trailer was: a sticker, a signature, and a prayer.
The sticker didn't work. It never does.
