Migration phases: Phase 0 audit through Phase 4 decommission

Migrating from Dropbox to a sovereign architecture is structurally similar to any cloud-to-cloud migration: cut over new writes, background-migrate existing data, validate, decommission. The specifics for Dropbox: the existing data is reachable via the Dropbox API; the sync model can be replaced by SkyeConnex's web / desktop / virtual-drive clients without user-facing workflow change.

This guide assumes you have admin access to your Dropbox Business tenant and are migrating to a SkyeConnex Premium or Enterprise tier.

Steps

The procedure

  1. STEP 01

    Audit the existing Dropbox tenant

List all user accounts. List all team folders and their members. Identify the total volume (Dropbox admin console shows this). Categorise content by sensitivity — personal user space vs. team folders vs. classified-handling materials. The categorisation drives which compliance preset pack you'll select per category.

  2. STEP 02

    Configure SkyeConnex tenant

Create a Company tenant. Select the appropriate compliance preset pack (PIPEDA / GDPR / SOC 2 / etc.). Configure the geo-policy allow-list. Create per-user accounts under the Company; pre-provision team folders. The platform sends magic-link account-activation emails to each user; users complete onboarding without admin intervention.

  3. STEP 03

    Cut new writes to SkyeConnex

Notify users that new files should be created on SkyeConnex. The SkyeConnex client surfaces (web, mobile, Windows virtual drive) cover the equivalent Dropbox workflow. The Windows virtual drive mounts SkyeConnex as a drive letter — users see no workflow change. The mobile app supports the same upload, share, and view patterns. Existing Dropbox writes continue but are now obsolete.

  4. STEP 04

    Background-migrate existing files

The migration is a parallel read-from-Dropbox / write-to-SkyeConnex operation. SkyeConnex provides a migration tool that uses the Dropbox API to enumerate and stream existing files; each file is uploaded through the standard SkyeConnex client (full encryption, framing, Reed-Solomon scatter). Migration progress is visible in the admin dashboard. Large tenants (multi-TB) typically complete migration within 24-72 hours depending on network bandwidth.

  5. STEP 05

    Validate and decommission Dropbox

Confirm every migrated file has a valid SkyeConnex integrity certificate. Compare file counts and total volumes between source and destination. For sensitive content, generate signed sovereignty reports to confirm residency. Once validated, disable Dropbox writes and schedule the Dropbox tenant for cancellation per your contractual notice period.

FAQ

Common questions

Will users have to change how they work?

Minimally. The Windows virtual drive provides a Dropbox-equivalent file-system experience — files appear in a drive letter, drag-and-drop works the same way. The web app provides a Dropbox-equivalent browser experience. Mobile and share-link patterns also match. Most users complete the transition with a short onboarding email.

What about Dropbox's smart-sync / selective-sync semantics?

SkyeConnex's virtual drive provides on-demand access without requiring local caching of files. Users see all their files in the drive letter; the platform fetches on-demand and decodes locally. Caching behaviour is configurable per device.

Can we keep some content in Dropbox temporarily?

Yes — phased migration is common. Migrate high-sensitivity content first; lower-sensitivity content can stay in Dropbox while you complete user onboarding. The SkyeConnex sharing system can co-exist with Dropbox sharing during the transition.

What if Dropbox has my data under a different jurisdiction than my SkyeConnex allow-list?

This is the typical reason for migrating. The new uploads to SkyeConnex are immediately compliant with the allow-list. The migration of existing data moves through SkyeConnex's compliant path on each file — by the time migration completes, all data is in-policy.
